This book’s raison d’être highlights the “learner” aspect of discipleship. As Christians, we should all aspire to deepen our knowledge of Christ. Even Paul, the prolific author of much of the New Testament, once lamented, “That I may know him…” (Philippians 3:10). I’ve often quipped that this verse is the most convicting slice of scripture for me. We should strive to gain a richer understanding of the Holy Scriptures and, consequently, a more profound knowledge of our heavenly Father. If Paul, with all his revelations, still yearned to know more, we are certainly without excuse.
Many statements made by Christians lack any scriptural foundation. This is the driving force behind this project. From the myth of humans getting their wings at death to the dangerous idea that 'God won't give you more than you can handle,' this book will tackle the misconceptions you've likely heard and believed. The last two chapters will deal more with how we came to possess the Holy Scriptures in their current form. By the end of this book, you will have the tools to challenge empty Christian clichés and embrace a faith rooted in biblical truth. My goal for all who delve into this book is that, upon finishing, readers will have a clearer understanding of how to articulate the truths of our faith. I hope you’ll appreciate my unique sense of humor along the way. If, by reading this book, you abandon some of these clichéd Christian sayings, perhaps you can move towards a more profound, more intimate knowledge of God’s grace, mercy, and sovereignty. If that happens, my efforts will not have been in vain.
